BRIEF: New Antietam restaurant in Eastern Market closes

July 30, 2014

By Frank Witsil, Detroit Free Press

July 30--Antietam, a restaurant that opened earlier this month to much fanfare, closed this week.

It was unclear Tuesday why the doors were shut -- or when it would reopen. The restaurant's latest social media post said only that, "We will be closed Monday evening."

An e-mail late Tuesday from Antietam maÎtre d'h"tel Matthew Varvil, said: "Antietam will be closed, following our soft opening, to allow us the opportunity to refine our process. We have had a lovely and magical week and look forward to many more ahead."

The restaurant, at 1428 Gratiot in the Eastern Market district, is the result of an art deco restoration and renovation project by photographer, artist and metro Detroit native Gregory Holm.

Last month, it was featured in the New York Times. It was heralded as a place that featured craft cocktails, bar snacks, shareable plates and entrees.
