July 03--Clothing and coloring contests, glow-in-the-dark tattoos and a concert by the Tabernacle Big Band are part of the fun for the eighth annual Patriotism at the Post tonight, July 3, in Fort Oglethorpe.

Events get underway with opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. at the polo field on Barnhardt Circle.

The Patriotic Kids Contest will start off this family-style Fourth of July celebration. Children will line up at the bandstand to show off their patriotic pride by dressing in red, white and blue. The best decorated girl and boy (12 years and younger) will win a prize.

The winners of the Patriotic Kids Coloring Contest, sponsored by the Times Free Press, also will be announced and the winning artwork displayed on the bandstand.

The children's ministry of Battlefield Community Seventh-day Adventist Church will offer the free, glow-in-the-dark patriotic tattoos for children. Medals and backpacks will be available to kids who participate in the sack races.

At parents' request, bounce houses will be on-site, with admission available for a small fee. Businesses will have booths with patriotic themes and each will have an activity, game or giveaway for children.

The Tabernacle Big Band will perform at 8 p.m. This full band evoking the 1940s era features four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and a rhythm section. The group performs jazz and patriotic arrangements as well as Glenn Miller-style swing numbers. Several of the band's patriotic numbers will be sing-alongs involving the crowd.

Trumpet player John Feezell says Tabernacle Big Band is excited to perform for a second year.

"How can you not be ready to celebrate Independence Day when we open the concert with Glenn Miller's 'In the Mood?" he asks. "We want to see people in front of the stage dancing and everyone joining in for the patriotic sing-along."

Fireworks will end the evening at 9:30 p.m.

Admission is free; parking at the polo field is $5 per car. Donations from the audience will be collected to benefit the band. Concessions will be available. Rain date for the concert and fireworks is Saturday, July 5.
