July 03--Although light rain continued to fall, the Charlotte Symphony'sSummer Pops concert at SouthPark will start by 9 p.m., followed by the annual fireworks display.

"ON!! We are doing it!," the symphony tweeted at 8:30 p.m.

The concert and fireworks were touch-and-go earlier Thursday evening when severe thunderstorms rolled into Charlotte, including SouthPark, where the symphony stages the annual patriotic concert and fireworks.

The National Weather Service said the storms were capable of producing quarter-size hail.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Mecklenburg County until 11 p.m. because so much rain fell.

At 8:30 p.m., Charlotte firefighters responded to a swift-water rescue call in the 2100 block of Wittstock Drive, which is near Park Road. The call turned out to be a prank.

The symphony's concert had originally been scheduled to start at 8:15 p.m., followed by the fireworks.

The symphony earlier tweeted that a big crowd stood in line as gates opened at 5 p.m.
