July 03--ALTON -- The Alton Housing Board of Commissioners gave the go-ahead Tuesday for the executive director to reinvest funds from a certificate of deposit at whichever bank offers the best interest rate.

Executive Director Andy Hightower said the Alton Housing Association (AHA) is contacting local financial institutions to locate the highest interest rate.

The CD, with $107,287, comes due July 31.

The vote was unanimous in favor, with all commissioners present at the brief meeting.

As part of the staff's monthly reports, Hightower said he is meeting with a telephone equipment installation company to discuss possibility of obtaining additional security cameras for housing complexes.

He also said residents have been warned about increased police patrols at Alton Acres and Oakwood Estates during the July 4 holiday.

The patrols are to prevent disorderliness and illegal shooting of fireworks, which happened in 2010 at Oakwood. Some members of a crowd of hundreds shot fireworks at firefighters responding to a purposely set trash receptacle fire.

He also said the AHA's Madison County HOME Program Grant application is before the County Board and Madison County Community Development for review. The request goes before the MCCD Grants Committee, then the county board, for approval.

The AHA is asking for $374,000 frm the HOME Program to build two of the five single-family homes it wants to build along Toledo Avenue, but could receive another amount.

The AHA then plans to use some of $718,000 in replacement housing funds it got after demolition of Joesting Terrace complex several years ago to build the other three houses.

Estimated cost of the five homes is $649,000, Hightower said.

The AHA would manage and maintain the homes.
