July 29, 2014

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 29 (EFE).- An exhibition of 69 works by Joan Miro and 23 photographs of the Spanish artist taken by gallery owner Alfredo Melgar opens to the public on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro, organizers said.

"La magia de Miro" (The Magic of Miro) has already traveled to the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Curitiba.

Admission to the exhibition, which runs until Sept. 29, is free at the Caixa Cultural in Rio de Janeiro.

The show will head to the cities of Recife and Salvador once its run in Rio ends.

The traveling exhibition of drawings and engravings by Miro is being curated by Melgar, a photographer, gallery owner and collector.

"The exhibition reveals a more intimate and personal side of the Catalan artist's world by including sketches and notes, as well as works produced in pencil on paper, during the last five years of his life," the Caixa Cultural said.

The works in the show are from different periods in the artist's career from 1962 to 1983.

The exhibition features 23 black-and-white photographs taken of Miro by Melgar, who met the artist in Paris when he was starting his career as a professional photographer.

Joan Miro (1893-1983) was a painter, sculptor and ceramicist known for his colorful surrealist works. EFE
