Wallingford hires new IT director

July 30--WALLINGFORD -- When Karen Veilleux started working for the Southington school district, the use of computers in the classroom was still something of a novelty.

"Students back then weren't using computers every day," Veilleux said Tuesday after Wallingford school officials announced that she has been hired by that district as its information technology director. Veilleux, who will start her new job Oct. 1, will earn $106,085 a year. "Now, technology has become an extension of the classroom."

Veilleux is replacing Randall Backus, who left the Wallingford district in March to become the chief technology officer for Newington's schools.

Leaving the Southington schools system "is bittersweet," Veilleux said.

Working in the town she lived in for so long was convenient for the mother of three, whose daughters were born during a five-year stretch during the mid-point of her time at Southington. Her children are now 12, 14 and 17 years old.

"I made so many long-lasting relationships there and I'm very proud of what we accomplished over the years," she said. "But now my daughters are older, I saw this (her new job) as a real opportunity. Wallingford has similar technology and I really felt I could make a difference."

Wallingford Superintendent of Schools Salvatore Menzo said Veilleux was one of two finalists that the Board of Education interviewed Monday night, before voting to hire her.

"She comes from a district that is very forward thinking about technology," Menzo said.

Veilleux is head of a statewide group of information technology professionals whose districts use Power School, an Internet-based information technology system that provides grade management and viewing for teachers and students.

"That's the something that the board was impressed with," Menzo said.
