July 29--DUNCAN -- Moving into the last few days of rehearsals, Teen Theatre participants are putting the final touches on their upcoming production of "The Pied Piper of Hamlin."
A workshop of Duncan Little Theatre, Teen began July 14 and will conclude with the performance of the play at 2 p.m. Saturday in Simmons Center Theatre.
"This week, we're working on characterization and scene work," Teen Theatre Director Veronica Hodgson said. "Three weeks is really short. The shortest time I've had to put a play together is a month.
"Most of them have most of their lines memorized. I'm impressed with how seriously they're taking their responsibility."
"The Pied Piper" focuses on a town with a rat infestation. To remove the rodents, the town hires the Pied Piper, played by Brady Henricks. The production mixes elements of comedy and dark humor to bring the story to life.
Hodgson said she's excited to work with the teenagers, many of whom are older than her usual clientele at the Hodgson Studios. She said it's been fun working with the youth, who she found to be respectful and talented.
Alyssa Flesher, a student aid to the director, said she is enjoying taking on a different role with the show.
In previous years, she has been a Teen Theatre participant. This year, she's helping pull the show together by making music selections and working on choreography for the show.
"I'm really enjoying the leadership role," Flesher said. "It's something else to put under my belt."
Hodgson said Flesher is her "right hand" for the production. She said she's appreciated the help she's received throughout the production, noting the role Simmons Center employees BethAnn Hough and Edmond Culberson have played in theater lighting. Hough has previously directed Teen Theatre.
"It's really exciting to have people who are committed and want to see it be successful," Hodgson said.
