Street name change for Rev. Stenson to draw opposition Tuesday

July 30--A public hearing on changing the name of Haywood Road to honor the late Rev. Dr. Marshell Stenson Jr., scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, is drawing some opposition from the street's residents.

"I would like for it to stay Haywood Road because of the changes that would have to be done with banking, doctors' offices, schools and what have you," said Janice Ricks, a resident of the road for nearly three years. "Rev. Stenson was a very good man; he was a good minister, but we would rather that the name of the street stay the same."

A resolution to change the name for the longtime pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church, which is on Haywood Road, cleared Macon-Bibb County Commission with unanimous approval in May. But a public hearing is required before the change to Marshell Stenson Jr. Drive can get final approval.

Al Tillman, chairman of the commission's Facilities & Engineering Committee, said he expects several people to show up in opposition of the change. Stenson died in December 2013 at the age of 77.

The public hearing will be held in commission chambers at the Macon-Bibb County Government Center, 700 Poplar St.
