MVCC Cultural Series Fall Lineup Bringing in Big Names in Comedy, TV, Fiction, Music

UTICA, N.Y., July 28 -- Mohawk Valley Community College issued the following news release:

Mohawk Valley Community College's Cultural Series has announced an exciting and eclectic lineup for its Fall events, which features an appearance by "Saturday Night Live" comedian Rob Schneider, a performance by "America's Got Talent" speed painter Robert Channing, a lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Richard Russo, and a concert by '90s rockers Vertical Horizon. The Cultural Series brochure with the complete list of events should be hitting mailboxes in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison counties in the coming days.

Emmy Award-nominated actor and comedian Rob Schneider will perform on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jorgensen Athletic and Event Center on the Utica Campus. Schneider, who spent four seasons with "SNL," is known for his trademark blend of character and comedic acting. He has starred in "50 First Dates," "The Longest Yard," and "Mr. Deeds." He also co-wrote and starred in "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo," its sequel, and "The Hot Chick." Tickets are $20 general, $10 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students (limited supply).

Robert Channing, Mohawk Valley resident, speed painter and mind-artist from NBC's "America's Got Talent," will perform his "Imagination Into Art" on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Stanley Center for the Arts in downtown Utica. Tickets are $15 general, $10 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students (limited supply). Partial proceeds will benefit the BELIEVE 271 Fund, which helps volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and Ladies Auxiliary members in Oneida and Herkimer counties who suffer from life-threatening illnesses.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo will give a lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Schafer Theater on the Utica Campus. Russo's 2001 novel, "Empire Falls," won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was adapted into an HBO miniseries. Russo is a master of characters and descriptions of small-town America, and his humorous lectures cover his approach to shaping narratives. Tickets are $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.

Alternative rockers Vertical Horizon will perform on Friday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. in the Schafer Theater on the Utica Campus. The band broke onto the scene in 1999 with the album, "Everything You Want," which went on to sell more than 2 million copies. The album's title track became Billboard's Most Played Single of 2000. The Mohawk Valley's own Shawn "Big Sexy" Smith from NBC's "The Voice" will open the show. Tickets are $15 general, $10 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.

Other series highlights include:

* Kris Allen, winner of the 2009 season of "American Idol": Tuesday, Sept. 2; 7 p.m. in Schafer Theater, Utica Campus. $5 general, $2 MVCC employees, free for MVCC students.

* Wassa Pan Afrika Dance Ensemble: Friday, Sept. 5; 7 p.m. in Schafer Theater, Utica Campus. $10 general, $5 MVCC employees, free for MVCC students.

* Singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins: Saturday, Oct. 4; 8 p.m. in Festine Auditorium, Rome Campus. $10 general, $5 MVCC employees, free for MVCC students.

Tickets for the Robert Channing show are currently on sale online at www.mvcc.edu/tickets and at the Stanley Box Office. Tickets for all other events go on sale at noon on Friday, Aug. 1, through the MVCC Box Office.

There are more than 100 scheduled Cultural Series events this fall. Most Cultural Series events are $5 or less to the general public and many are free. Events include concerts, comedians, lectures, film screenings and discussions, workshops, family fun events, and more. Events are selected by the College's Cultural Events Council, a body of faculty and staff who seek input from colleagues, students, and community members to choose events that will enrich the College's and community's cultural opportunities. The Box Office on MVCC's Utica Campus is located just outside the Schafer Theater (Room 106) within the Information Technology Building at 1101 Sherman Drive, Utica. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Rome Campus Box Office is located within the Student Service Center on the first floor of the Plumley Complex at 1101 Floyd Ave., Rome. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Fridays, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
