Rhinos are in the line of fire in Sea Point

July 28, 2014

SEA POINT is not a place you would normally expect to see a rhino, but a massive steel beast has been installed on the promenade with a message to raise awareness about the species' dwindling numbers.

Artist Andre Carl van der Merwe used separate sheets of metal that, when viewed from a particular angle, as a hunter would, illustrate the rhino in crosshairs. The rhino sculpture was one of those chosen for Art54, a public art project.

Art54's aim is to transform Cape Town'sWard 54 - the Atlantic Seaboard - into an open-air art gallery.

The public gallery, however, will only be there for four months.

Other artists showing their work in the project are Alexis Aronson, Faith 47 and Dathini Mzayiya, Ross Frylinck, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Alan Munro, Kirsty Rielly, Andrej Urbanski, Sydelle Willow-Smith, Michael Elion, Ralph Borland and Greg Benetar. Picture: Henk Kruger
