July 28--NEWBURYPORT -- Antique lovers and treasure hunters have a great opportunity to add to their collections today, as Yankee Homecoming celebrates the golden anniversary of the Annual Antique Show and Sale, taking place beginning at 9 a.m. at High Street'sBelleville Church
Sponsored by the Historical Society of Old Newbury, 27 vendors will be on hand to offer a multitude of collectibles, including paintings and prints, according to Historical Society office manager Emily Shafer.
"Most of the vendors are from New England, with a lot from Massachusetts and Rhode Island," Shafer said. "One is coming from as far away as Pennsylvania."
The event has always drawn a crowd from throughout the region, so for antique mavens and those looking for something special, Shafer's advice is to get there early.
"The antique show has been such a long-standing tradition," Shafer said. "A lot of people really look forward to it every year. This year there will be sandwiches that people can buy for lunch while they're at the show."
This is one of the Historical Society's major annual fundraisers, Shafer said, and this year the group that preserves Newburyport's past is saving up for a new roof on its well-known High Street museum.
"It's an old house, built in 1808, but it's such a treasure, and it really needs a new roof," Shafer said. "It's a wonderful place; you'll find something special around every corner. I notice something new every day."
This year, in honor of Newburyport's 250th Anniversary celebration, the Historical Society is offering Newburyport residents free tours of the museum, located at the corner of High and Fruit streets, and during Yankee Homecoming, the Society also offers tours free to visitors. Normally, tours are $5 for adults.
The Historical Society offers tours Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m.
