Tokyo stocks gain in morning on weaker yen, S&P's rise to record

Tokyo stocks gained Friday morning as investor sentiment was lifted by a weaker yen trend and the S&P 500's rise to a record closing high for the second consecutive day overnight in New York.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 87.17 points, or 0.57 percent, from Thursday to 15,371.59. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 4.70 points, or 0.37 percent, to 1,274.56.

Major gainers included construction, brokerage and steel shares.
