BRIEF: MSA Safety posts drop in profit

July 25, 2014

By Alex Nixon, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

July 25--MSA -- Safety Inc., a Cranberry-based maker of safety equipment, said its profit in the second quarter dropped on lower sales.

Net income in the April-June quarter was $22.5 million, or 59 cents a share, down 6 percent from $24 million, or 64 cents a share a year earlier.

Sales were $282.5 million, down from $285.9 million.

MSA sold fewer self-contained breathing apparatus because of delays in approvals from regulators for new products, the company said. It also experienced a decline in gas and flame detectors.

Declines were partially offset by increased sales of head protection and portable gas detectors, MSA said.
