Tokyo stocks open slightly higher on overnight Wall St. gains

Tokyo stocks opened slightly higher Wednesday on buying supported by overnight gains on Wall Street thanks to positive U.S. existing home sales data for June and upbeat earnings reports.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 28.58 points, or 0.19 percent, from Tuesday to 15,371.86. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.05 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,276.32.

Major gainers included insurance, mining and nonferrous metal shares.
