July 22--HUNTSVILLE -- The Samuel Walker Houston High School biennial reunion is set for this week and there are plenty of activities planned to celebrate the occassion.

The reunion is open to anyone who graduated from the school before its eventual closing in 1968.

Beginning in 1974, the Samuel Walker Houston High School reunion took place every four years until 1986.

Since then, the reunion has taken place every two years for more opportunities to see one another.

"The main reason we changed it is because we were dying, so we needed to do it more often," said LaJuana Glaze, an employee at the Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center.

"We also need the descendants of the alumni to pick up the mantle. We are trying to recruit as many descendants of the alumni to carry on the history of our school for us."

The reunion will begin Thursday with a gospel program at First Missionary Baptist Church starting at 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 1530 10th St. and the public is welcome to attend.

A picnic will be held at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., with a dance afterward.

There will also be tours of the Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center given to the alumni and the general public throughout the three-day period.

The museum reopened in April and is looking for volunteers.
