Tokyo stocks gain on hopes for positive earnings reports

Tokyo stocks gained Tuesday, supported by investor optimism for positive earnings reports from Japanese companies in the April-June quarter.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 127.57 points, or 0.84 percent, from Friday at 15,343.28. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 9.98 points, or 0.79 percent, higher at 1,273.27.

Japanese financial markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.

Major gainers included nonferrous metal, construction and insurance shares.
