Project Number: CUB/SGP/OP5/Y3/STAR/CC/13/08 Country: Cuba Area Of Work: Climate Change Mitigation Operational Phase: Phase 5 Grant Amount: US$ 12,530.00 Co-Financing cash: US$ 4,700.00 Start Date: 8/2014 End Date: 8/2016 Status: Not active yet Project Description: This project will be developed in an isolated community in the municipality Nicetas PÉrez, in Guantanamo province, and aims to contribute to the mitigation of climate change through the introduction of renewable energy sources, as the most practical and economical alternative to carry electricity the housing estates that live in this mountainous area difficult to access. Due to the geographical location of this community has been impossible to link to the National Electricity System (SEN), being away from them a total of 23 vi-dwellings, which therefore do not have electricity, using their lighters settlers kerosene for lighting and firewood for cooking food. Since this problem is to electrify the 23 homes with solar photovoltaic systems that will provide families a better life and thus reduc-it nuirÁ pressure on timber resources and emissions of greenhouse gases. This community is nestled in a rural area of ??difficult access, an important area for biodiversity conservation in the easternmost region of Cuba, why all the actions that are undertaken as part of the project will also contribute to the conservation flora and fauna and local development. The aim is to foster the development of local production of coffee, principal ren-GLON, like other crops, thereby preventing the exodus of the population, ensuring ac-cess to electricity through renewable energy sources in housing each peasant and thus to information. Actions of educa-tion environment, training, awareness and community participation in relation to the sustainable use of natural resources and the re-use of renewable energy sources and access to drinking water is further developed. The results of this project contribute to achieve the objectives set out in the UNDAF United Nations Development 2013-2018 (UNDAF), supporting the results related to the strengthening of national capacities for sustainable land denamiento or-and strengthening national capacity to provide sustainable energy services and implement measures to mitigate climate change and adapt to it and promoting strategies for conservation and use of biodiversity. They will directly benefit from the project activities some 92 people.
