MANAMA: The iconic Pearl Trail project in Muharraq was yesterday given the go-ahead. The cultural project was approved as His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting at Gudaibiya Palace.

The Islamic Development Bank has granted Bahrain a loan of BD18.1 million, up from an initial BD15m, to fund the project.

"Twenty-seven historical buildings will be revamped, including 15 featuring on a list of the Unesco World Heritage," said Cabinet Secretary General Dr Yaser bin Essa Al Naser.

Nineteen public squares (plazas) will also be set up along with four car parking lots, a visitors' centre and a pedestrian bridge.

Under the project, 750 houses on the 3.5km pearl trail will be given a facelift.
