The recently launched Huawei Ascend P7 is set to retail at Kshs 55,000 from Safaricom outlets.

Janet Atika, head of retail, Safaricom said during the launch of the Ascend P7 at Imax thanked Huawei for the partnership with Safaricom and continued support in regards to the smartphone market.

"Safaricom is working with the vendors to ensure that these devices are affordable to their customers, so that they can really have a good experience in the world of smart devices. Seeing that the statistics are giving us barely a monthly uptake of 200,000 units across the country that is just about 45% of the total amount of phones we sell monthly in this country. Thus I think we have more opportunities for our customers to access these devices," said Atika.

The penetration of smartphones in Kenya stands at 8% of the total subscriber base of 31.3 million.

The first 500 customers to buy the phone in any of the 43 Safaricom outlets will be able to get the phone with a free cover, free Bluetooth speaker and a power bank.

The launch of the Ascend P7, billed as the slimmest smartphone, makes Kenya the third country after the first launch in France, thus placing Kenya among top technology consumers worldwide.

"We are constantly coming up with newer and ever more agile products to suite todays' consumers who are people always on the move but at the same time need to be in touch with one another," said Dean Yu, CEO, Huawei Kenya.

The device has LTE capability and thus provides fast connectivity.

Ascend P7 is slim at 6.5mm and has a 5-inch full high-definition display with a glass covered back creating a perfect finish. The front-facing camera has an 8MP BSI sensor and features modes like face enhancement and 'selfie' panorama and also enhances snap shots.

Huawei has placed an ambitious target of 10 million unit sales for the Ascend P7 worldwide, the same target placed for its predecessor the Ascend P6. By October 2013, the Ascend P6 had sold some 3 million units. More than 6 months later at the Ascend P7 launch, Huawei announced that the P6's sales had reached 4 million.
