2014 Bemidji Area Arts Endowment grants

July 20--The advisory board of the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, recently awarded $16,285 in grants and scholarships to area arts organizations, non profits and string instrument students. The funds will be used to support arts events, workshops, performances, and opportunities for education and access to the arts fulfilling the BAAE mission to create a community in which the arts flourish and enhance our lives. Grant recipients included:

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,600 from the North Star Arts Fund for arts programming for adults who have been diagnosed as developmentally disabled.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,400 from the Frederick Marshall Fund for the purchase of new lighting in the performance hall.

--Paul Bunyan Playhouse was awarded $700 from BAAE and $300 from the H.B. and Ina T. Roholt Family Fund for the Arts for a Paul Bunyan Playhouse youth and theater project that partners with the Bemidji Boys and Girls Club and Red Lake High School Summer Enrichment Program to provide a theater experience for underprivileged youth.

--Watermark Art Center was awarded $500 from the Richard and Pan Nelson Family Fund for the Visual Arts and $500 from BAAE in support of the 12th annual "It's Only Clay" regional weekend workshops.

--Watermark Art Center was awarded $1,000 from BAAE to host "Poetry Slam and open Mic Jazz Celebration" on the Friday night of the Mississippi Headwaters Festival of Poetry and Haiku.

--Watermark Art Center was awarded $1,000 from BAAE in support of Watermark's Mississippi Headwaters Festival of Poetry and Haiku Saturday morning reading workshop and presentation.

--Bemidji First City of Arts Studio Cruise was awarded $1,000 from the H. B. and Ina T. Roholt Family Fund for the Arts to be used to help cover the cost of marketing the studio cruise.

--Northern Elementary School was awarded $325 from BAAE for reading genre artworks, eight canvas panels, designed and created by Northern students with help from high school art students, and displayed in the school library.

--Mask and Rose Women's Theater Collective was awarded $1,000 from BAAE to host a presentation of The Legend of White Woman Creek, a folk opera performed by Brooklyn, N.Y. artist Katie Hartman.

--Bemidji Symphony Orchestra was awarded $1,000 from BAAE to support the BSO Summer Pops Concert featuring the Jae Sinnett Trio.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts awarded $500 from BAAE to bring Margaret Burger of Fortuna Puppets to the school for a four day puppet theatre experience for students between the age of six and 11.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $960 from BAAE for Octubafest music books for a planned Octubafest in October 2014.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,000 from BAAE towards the purchase of low range handbells for the First City Bell Choir.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,000 from BAAE to bring Ross Sutter, musician and Bart Sutter, poet, for a two day music and poetry program at Bemidji State Park and Bemidji Public Library.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,000 from BAAE for a hammered dulcimer workshop with Paul Imholte held during the annual fiddle camp.

--Headwaters School of Music and the Arts was awarded $1,000 from BAAE to bring two international performing arts groups to Bemidji as part of the Arts Midwest WorldFest Concerts.

Scholarships from The Everett Wilimek Endowment for Orchestral String Studies were awarded to:

--Giovanni Allosso, $250 to continue study on the violin.

--Summer Crow, $250 for individual violin lessons.
