"You know how our music scene can be a little fragmented," she says. "This series is great because there's no genre, no age. If you're a songwriter, there's no other description that needs to be served.
"Well, I have to like it."
The Smiling Bison sets also have been important testing grounds for new material that McKee has earmarked for an upcoming studio album, the follow-up to 2012's "Next to Nowhere." She hopes to be finish the recording sometime this summer, but hasn't set a release date.
"Yesterday would be nice," she says, laughing. "It's kind of a religious experience. It's not exactly 40 days out in the desert, but it's that kind of thing. I'm learning about myself and I realize I'm very detail-oriented. I'm just taking the time I need for it to be the best I think it can be."
