July 19, 2014

Project Number: CUB/SGP/OP5/Y3/STAR/CC/13/03 Country: Cuba Area Of Work: Climate Change Mitigation Operational Phase: Phase 5 Grant Amount: US$ 37,710.00 Co-Financing cash: US$ 13,055.00 Start Date: 8/2014 End Date: 8/2016 Status: Not active yet Project Description: This project will be developed in the rural community of "La Cueva" Nicetas PÉrez municipality in the province GuantÁnamo, and aims to contribute to the mitigation of climate change through the introduction of renewable energy sources, as the most practical and economical alternative to bring electricity to the housing estates that live in this mountainous area difficult to access. Due to the geographical location of this community has been impossible to link to the National Electricity System (SEN) and also can be connected to the other part of the Community "The Cave" which is electrified with DENYO GE brand, with a power of 13 KVA , which currently has 99 houses and 396 inhabitants. This part of the community located about 10 km from the GE has a total of 79 homes that do not have any electricity, using their inhabitants kerosene burners for lighting and firewood for cooking food. From this issue are intended to electrify the 79 homes that are insulated with solar photovoltaic systems, which provide for the family of better living conditions and thereby reduce pressure on wood resources also aims to establish a system of pumping water by a photovoltaic solar system in this community, both actions will help mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases. This community is nestled in a rural area of ??difficult access, an important area for biodiversity conservation in the easternmost region of Cuba, why all the actions that are undertaken as part of the project will also contribute to the conservation flora and fauna and local development. The aim is to foster the development of local production of coffee, main line, like other crops, thereby preventing the exodus of the population, ensuring access to electricity through renewable energy sources in the home of every farmer and thus the information. Environmental education, training, awareness and community participation in relation to the sustainable use of natural resources and the use of renewable energy sources and access to drinking water is further developed. The results of this project contribute to achieve the objectives set out in the UNDAF United Nations Development 2013-2018 (UNDAF), supporting the results related to the strengthening of national capacities for sustainable land management and the strengthening of national capacities to provide sustainable energy services and implement measures to mitigate climate change and adapt to it and promoting strategies for conservation and use of biodiversity. They will directly benefit from the project activities some 316 people. Grantee: Comunidad La Cueva Organisation Mission : For GEF SGP, the community-based approach is the cornerstone for addressin
