July 19--POULSBO -- Katy Helfrick, 17, has wanted to be a Rockette ever since she was in fifth grade. That's when she saw the famous dance troupe from New York City on its road trip to Seattle.

Helfrick will spend the next week in the Big Apple learning the Rockettes' moves and touring Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, where the leggy dancers have wowed audiences since 1925. Helfrick auditioned in January and heard in May that she had made the cut for the Rockettes' Summer Intensive Camp.

Helfrick, who began dancing in sixth grade at Galletta School of Dance in Poulsbo, was also inspired by Debbie Reynolds's performance in the classic musical "Singin' in the Rain."

"I'm excited for this opportunity to train with the Rockettes," said Helfrick, who left for the camp Saturday. "This has been a goal of mine since I was 12. One of the Rockettes' mottos is 'Reach for your Dreams,' and that's what I'm doing. I can't wait!"

Helfrick now studies at the Academy of Dance in Port Orchard.
