CANTON, Ohio, July 18 -- Malone University issued the following news release:

The American Prize has announced that two works by composer Jesse Ayers, D.M.A., professor of music at Malone University, have been selected as finalists for the 2014 American Prize in Composition. Winners will be announced in a few weeks. Dr. Ayers' nominated works are:

Jericho, a finalist in the Concert Band category, is a surround-sound concert story for either concert band or orchestra that includes narration and unorthodox audience participation. The work has been performed in 20 cities across the United States from Pensacola, Fla., to Portland, Ore.

Rahab, a finalist in the Opera-Musical-Film Score category, is a hybrid, surround-sound concert story for mezzo-soprano and concert band--part oratorio, part radio drama. The full version has been performed in Valparaiso, Indiana, and Decorah, Iowa. A piano-vocal version has been performed in Canton, Ohio.

Ayers was the winner of the very first American Prize for Orchestral Composition in 2011 for his work The Passion of John Brown, and was a double-finalist for the 2013 American Prize for Band Composition, co-winner of the 2011 Dayton Ballet New Music for New Dance competition, a 2010 recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, and numerous awards from ASCAP. His music has been performed in Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, and more than 100 U.S. cities. His music has been selected on two occasions by the International Society for Contemporary Music to represent the United States at the prestigious World Music Days festival. He is best known for his orchestral and symphonic band surround-sound concert stories that explore the intersection of the spiritual and natural worlds and the redemptive intervention of a very real God in human affairs.

The American Prize is a series of non-profit, national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards and national recognition to America's finest performing artists, ensembles, and composers.
