Handelsbanken opens fifth UK bank

July 18, 2014

? Swedish lender Handelsbanken increased its UK lending by 12 per cent to 12.8bn in the second quarter of the year, it reported yesterday. The growth led the group to open its fifth regional bank in the country, with the latest office covering Yorkshire and the north east of England. It has 177 branches across the UK.

Mortgages led the growth, with lending up 26 per cent to 3.9bn. Business lending increased seven per cent to 8.9bn. "We will continue to invest in traditional, local banking to meet the demand we see from businesses and individuals across Britain," said Handelsbanken's UK chief executive Anders Bouvin.
