Dollar in lower 101 yen zone in early Tokyo deals

July 17, 2014

The U.S. dollar traded in the lower 101 yen zone early Friday in Tokyo, little changed from its levels late Thursday in New York.

At 9 a.m., the dollar fetched 101.21-23 yen compared with 101.12-22 yen in New York and 101.49-51 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The euro was quoted at $1.3518-3518 and 136.83-84 yen against $1.3521-3531 and 136.82-92 yen in New York and $1.3533-3534 and 137.35-39 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.

In New York on Thursday, players bought the safe-haven yen on news that a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet had crashed near the Ukraine-Russian border and amid heightened tensions over the Palestinian situation.

But the yen-buying slowed as the dollar approached the 101 yen threshold.
