Berry's back giving Cape Ann concert

July 17--Singer-songwriter and local favorite Chelsea Berry has been on the road for months and is returning to her beloved Cape Ann to hold an outdoor summer concert at Cape Ann'sMarina Resort on July 25.

Mile Marker One's Waterfront Pavilion, on the marina grounds, is a large event tent that holds 450 people. The show will be set up in family-friendly row seating along with a section of VIP cabaret tables in front of the stage.

Gloucester's Renee & Joe, who are married, will be the opening act, and will later perform in Berry's band.

Berry will first do an acoustic set, followed by a set with the full band, including Renee DuPuis on keys and backup vocals, Joe Cardoza on bass, Dennis Monagle on drums, and Brendan Burns, a Somerville guitarist, on lead guitar.

"I'm really looking forward to this hometown show," said Berry, an Alaskan native, who has been touring in support of her album, "Devil and the Deep Blue Sea."

At 21, the young singer-songwriter traveled more than 4,600 miles to the East Coast when she was accepted into Berklee College of Music in Boston to study songwriting. She found new inspiration on Cape Ann, where she settled about six years ago. Along her road of experience, she has performed in hundreds of clubs across the United States, as well as studying opera in her earlier training.

Fred Shrigley, owner of The Rhumb Line, who has supported local musicians for decades, took immediate notice of her voice and her stage presence.

Livingston Taylor has also taken notice of Berry's vocal talents and has called her voice "world-class." In fact, she has been touring recently with Taylor as his opening act, as well as headlining her own shows. She opened the sold-out Roger McGuinn concert at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport and has since headlined and sold out the venue on her own.

Berry also frequently supports artists such as Chris Isaak, Chris Smither, Cheryl Wheeler, Marshall Crenshaw, Vance Gilbert.

Berry acknowledged all the encouragement she has received from Cape Ann.

"Six years ago I began playing open mics at Cameron's, the Pleasant Street Tea Company, the Rhumb Line, Dog Bar -- and now most of my shows are in listening rooms and out of state," she said. "I've worked hard to get here but there is no question in my mind that there is no way I'd be where I am in my career if it weren't for the support system that Gloucester offers to musicians. It is something truly unique and amazing. It is because of the support that all of these wonderful opportunities have come my way. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart."

Tickets are available online at www.chelseaberry.brownpapertickets.com or in person at Mile Marker 1 at Cape Ann'sMarina Resort. Seating is general admission. The cabaret tables seat four, and the ticket price includes a bottle of prosecco. The event tent is enclosed so the show will go on rain or shine. If there are any tickets left the day of the concert, they will be sold at the door, but Berry has been known to sell out her Cape Ann shows.
