Tokyo stocks open higher on overnight Wall St. gains

Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as buying was bolstered by overnight gains on Wall Street.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 80.58 points, or 0.52 percent, from Wednesday to 15,459.88. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.90 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,279.49.

In New York overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high, helped by some upbeat corporate earnings. Major gainers in the Tokyo market included mining, rubber products as well as oil and coal products shares.
