Orland High School Drum Line performs in Library Park

July 16--The Orland High School Drum Line performed in Library Park on Thursday to raise money to send four of its members to band camp.

The students left Monday for a week filled with intense learning at Camp Serene, a beautiful mountain retreat nestled in the woods 20 miles northwest of Eugene, Ore.

The focus of the 26th annual camp is rudimentary drumming marching percussion and "pit" percussion, which is accomplished through a highly structured curriculum unlike that of any other percussion camp in the nation.

"My goal is to get better," said Gustavo Gontiz, 18, who will be a senior next year at Orland High.

Gontiz said the camp is a great experience for students like him who haven't grown up taking band since the fifth grade.

In fact, Gontiz said he started in band just two years ago, which he said is a tribute to Mike Walker, who is a great teacher.

"I couldn't even read music," he said.

Gontiz said he was a sophomore when he saw the drum line marching around the school and thought it was something he would like to do.

He said he plans to get the most he can out of attending the three-day drum camp.

Meanwhile, Orland Music Supporters continue to make noise about the popular high school marching band, and hope to raise another $50,000 by the start of school to replace at least 45 instruments, which range in price from $1,500 to $10,000 each.

Supporters said performances such as the one held Thursday help keep the needs of Orland students in the forefront.

To help with the fundraiser, please send your tax-deductible donation to P.O. Box 514, Orland CA 95963. Make checks payable to Orland Music Supporters, not the school district.
