July 12--The Hampton B. Allen Library in Wadesboro received a makeover last week.

In early May, library staff and the Friends of the Library decided they wanted to add a mural to the front of the library. After holding meetings to decide what type of painting they wanted, Anson County director of parks and recreation and building maintenance Jeff Waisner introduced them to Laurinburg artist Stuart Carmichael, who worked with the group on the design.

Once the building was painted, Carmichael painted a long vine stretching across the building. He later added children and an apple tree to the mural. He took only three days to complete his work, beginning on Monday and adding the final details on Wednesday.

"We're doing this to bring attention to the library," Waisner said. "It gives it pizazz and makes it special like it's supposed to be."

Carmichael works in several nearby counties. Besides the facade of the library, his work in Anson County includes murals at the Lillie Bennett Nursing Center and the National Guard Armory. He has been painting all of his life and attended Wingate College. Now, he paints everything from churches to day cares.

Although he specializes in murals, he also does other work, including lettering, business signs and more. "If it's paintable, I can do it," he said

Carmichael's business' name is Art Styles. In addition to being an artist, he is also an award-winning gospel soloist.
