July 15--GREENSBURG -- A series of photos and various pieces of art created by local individuals with disabilities that opened Friday proved to be one of the most successful shows at the local art gallery in recent months.

"Special Reflections," a unique collection of photography and diverse paintings brought together months of disparate works created by clients of Developmental Services, Inc. (DSI) and the ARC of Decatur County. Those nonprofit organizations have long sought to bring the talents of individuals living with developmental disabilities to the forefront of the eyes of the community, and Friday's opening show went a long way in accomplishing that.

ARC President Lynda Smith said more than 60 visitors passed through the Art on the Square Gallery Friday afternoon and early evening, taking in images that ran the gamut from serene nature shots to impressionistic oil paintings.

The works were created by no fewer than 20 clients who snapped photos of areas such as Mill Race Park in Columbus, the famous Decatur County Courthouse tree and the Strauther Pleak Round Barn.

Some of the photos also captured ordinary, everyday occurrences -- only from a perspective perhaps not seen by everyone.

One photographer captured a line of multi-colored bowling balls at Parkside Lanes, while another snapped a shot of some of South Park Cemetery's more elaborate grave markers.

Other artists put brush to canvas and created designs that featured flowers, palm trees and nature settings.

Smith said DSI's Carrie Shumaker was instrumental in making the project happen, and she accompanied the artists and photographers on trips to find the perfect subjects.

Some of the paintings were completed during classes conducted by local artist Billy Dilkes, as well, Smith said.

The grand opening of the exhibit, which runs throughout the month of July, serves as this month's "Second Friday" opening for the gallery.

Guests were able to indulge themselves with wine and hors d'oeuvres, while the artists themselves also stopped by to visit.
