July 14, 2014

ALBANY, N.Y., July 14 -- The Sage Colleges issued the following news release:

The Sage Colleges is saddened to announce the passing of Jim Richard Wilson, Director Emeritus of the Opalka Gallery. He was well known in the Capital Region art community and beyond. Wilson passed away Sunday morning at age 61.

"Jim Wilson will be greatly missed by all of us at Sage and so many more beyond," said Sage President Susan Scrimshaw. "It is a comfort that Opalka Gallery, which Jim's passion and artistic judgment inspired, will continue as a part of his legacy. His kindness to students, including my artist daughter, gave artistic life to many who will carry him with them all of their lives. We have lost a beloved leader, teacher and friend."

Wilson served as gallery director and Art History lecturer for The Sage Colleges for over 20 years (1992-2013). During his retirement he continued to serve as advisor to the gallery and The Sage Colleges. Previously, Wilson was with the State University of New York as assistant director of university-wide programs in the arts. He had been consultant to and lectured for numerous arts organizations and museums and was director of the Peter S. Loonam Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY for ten years prior to relocating to the Capital District of New York State.

Wilson began curating and mounting exhibitions in 1975. He is widely known for his work with post-World War II American Art and Jewish history and experience in the Capital Region of New York State.

Wilson also authored several writings on art and culture including: New York School: Another View; Dona Ann McAdams: Some Women; George Hofmann: Inner Life Articulated; Wimberley's Mode; A Place by the Sea (exhibition catalogue essays), and Style and Appearance: Alex Katz at the New York State Museum (a version of which appeared in Chronogram) among others.

A memorial service honoring Wilson will be held at the Opalka Gallery in September.
