Tokyo stocks open higher following overnight gains on Wall St.

Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as market sentiment was buoyed by overnight gains on Wall Street.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 96.74 points, or 0.63 percent, from Monday to 15,393.56. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.63 points, or 0.76 percent, at 1,275.09.

In New York on Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an intraday record high of 17,088.43.

Major gainers included rubber products, nonferrous metals and insurance shares.
