Smokin' on the Suwannee July 18-19

July 14--LIVE OAK -- The largest barbecue competition in the south is coming to Live Oak on July 18-19, and will be held at the Suwannee County Coliseum. Smokin' on the Suwannee is geared to be one of the most exciting events for food lovers.

Friday, July 18

Barbecue vendors will be open to the public on Friday at 5 p.m. Live entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. while participants are competing in the corn hole tournament. All of the proceeds raised will be donated to a charity. The cost to enter is $40 per team.

The Back Yard BBQ Throwdown Turn-In is an all-day event for local folks an opportunity to showcase their talents on the grill.

"It's an opportunity for local people, who don't cook professionally, to come out and showcase their barbecuing skills," said Damon Wooley, event founder and coordinator. "They can come and put up a tent, cook with the grill they use at their house, and just come and have fun."

The judging will take place at 7 p.m. The cost to enter is $20 per category, which includes chicken, ribs and pork. The winner of the throwdown will be announced on Saturday. The cost is $300 for team registration. More than 30 teams have confirmed their appearance for this year's competition.

Saturday, July 19

Participants can register for the Hog Jog 5K race at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Hog Jog race benefits the Back to School Bash which provides school supplies and backpacks for 1,000 students each year. The cost to enter the race is: $25 with race T-shirt; $20 without race T-shirt; and $20 per person with a group of 10 or more people. There is no fee for children 12 and under.

The second annual Human Foosball Tournament will start at 10 a.m., and is open for anyone to participate. Registration cost is $50.

Attendees will not want to miss the People's Choice Turn-In at 10 a.m. Participants will get to enjoy the best pulled pork, cooked in a variety of styles. Each participating professional cook team will cook a boston butt. Tickets are $10, and each person will get to sample and vote for their favorite flavor. The winning team will win a cash prize.

The official contest awards will be presented at 5 p.m.

The final event of the weekend will be the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight which begins at 8 p.m. in the coliseum. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

"I would like to invite everybody to come out to a family friendly event that is free of charge and an opportunity to sample some of the best award winning barbecue," Wooley said. "It's going to be a lot of fun and great food."
