July 14, 2014

Mozambique has secured a loan of 20 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to complete its safety infrastructure project at the Maputo International Airport.

With the receipt of the new funding, the Mozambican main airport in the capital city of Maputo will be able to fulfill the safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The European lender has revealed that the improvement scheme clearly represents safety priorities at the airport, comprising works to resurface the runway, taxiway and apron areas of the major gateway of Mozambique.

The project will also facilitate enhancement of landing lights, and ascertain sufficient amount of water supply to fight fire and bolster fuel supply infrastructure for aircraft.

According to the plans, the French development agency AFD and the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund will deliver financial assistance for the project.

The bank (EIB) has decided to provide the loan support after it accomplished a detailed review on the airport s investment requirements and plan to cut disruption throughout the construction phase to minimum.

The EIB VP - Pim van Ballekom revealed, Maputo Airport is the main passenger gateway to Mozambique and a leading regional transport hub essential for business and tourist travel in southern Africa.

The EIB is committed to supporting investment that facilitates transport and regional economic co-operation across Africa and we are pleased to support this crucial project that will significantly improve safety for air travelers to and from Mozambique.

The renovation scheme comes after the end of new international and domestic terminals at the Maputo Airport over the past 36 months.

In order to ensure sustained operations of airlines and fulfillment of the ICAO norms, it is crucial to carry out safety enhancement investments at the Mozambican gateway.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aeroportos de MoÇambique - Emanuel Chaves stated, The new investment at Maputo Airport backed by the EIB follows recent completion of new international and domestic terminals and will strengthen the airport s role as the leading gateway to Mozambique.

This will upgrade key infrastructure to international standards and benefit all users of the airport for many years to come.

The EIB-backed infrastructure upgrading venture at the Maputo Airport is likely to be accomplished within 2017. The lender will be involved in the planning and construction phases of the project, and will also offer technical support.
