July 14--Mohawk Place, the famed gritty bar and live music venue, is about to reopen under new ownership.

It will return under a slightly different name: Buffalo'sMohawk Place. New owner Richard Platt said he aims to have the venue open by mid-August, as he finalizes approvals from the city.

Mohawk Place, at 47 E. Mohawk St., closed in early 2013. For about two decades, it was a home for original music and touring bands from the alt-country, indie rock, punk and roots music scenes. Among the touring acts to play there during its run were the White Stripes, the Black Keys and Sam Roberts.

Platt said he has made some improvements to the place, including new floors and a new back bar, but he tried to keep the look as close as possible to what people remember about the old Mohawk. As far as the musical offerings, Platt is promising "the same and more" as before, including more rockabilly, Americana and blues.

"What a great property to just acquire with the all the development and happenings in downtown Buffalo," said Platt, who also owns the neighboring Electric Avenue bar.
