Callaway Commission demanding timely financial reports

July 12--CALLAWAY -- Commissioner Bob Pelletier expressed frustration Tuesday after asking for financial reports during several consecutive meetings but still not getting what he wanted.

"It shouldn't take 45 days to close the book," he said. "I feel something is wrong in that department."

Finance Director Debra Yeager said it takes 45 days to produce a monthly report because Callaway is working on an accrual system, recording revenue or expenses as they occur instead of when they are paid.

"Payable information doesn't even come into us for 30 days," Yeager said.

Pelletier and Commissioner Pamn Henderson are asking for a cash report, a recording of income when it's received and expenses when they are paid.

"Are we asking for something that's impossible?" Henderson asked.

Pelletier indicted he cannot be expected to make decisions based on expenses and income if he does not have the information in a timely manner. He added that something could be hidden from the commission the longer the reports take to complete.

"I'm not accusing them hiding anything," Pelletier said. "But, if I ask for something, I shouldn't have to stomp for it."

The commission voted to have Interim City Manager Michael Fuller investigate the problem. Fuller said providing a cash report should be possible. He added the reports the commission received have not changed since Marcus Collins left the city manager position.

"In fairness to Michael, I used to have this same conversation with the former city manager," Henderson said.
