Weekend best bets: NBA Summer League, Elvis Fest and Chris Robinson Brotherhood

July 11--A weekend of Las Vegas entertainment both new and classic lies ahead, with offerings ranging from an NBA showdown at UNLV to the return of an iconic Las Vegas venue for live music.

Here's a look at our weekend best bets:

Friday -- Saturday: Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation at the SciFi Center

In honor of its 30th anniversary, the traveling Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation hits Las Vegas this weekend with not one but two programs to premiere. Those looking for more sophisticated film-fest fodder can check out the Classic Festival, while fans of the strange and depraved will enjoy the Sick and Twisted Festival featuring selections like "Dumb Ways to Die," "Path of Blood" and "Slug Invasion." The festival also offers a $15 pass for both programs for those with varied tastes. Programs are $10 individually. The Classic fest is 8 p.m. Friday and 1 and 8 p.m. Saturday; the Sick and Twisted program begins at 10 p.m. Friday and 3 and 10 p.m. Saturday.

Tonight -- Saturday: Chris Robinson Brotherhood at Brooklyn Bowl

Former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robison and Co. stop in Las Vegas this weekend for a three-night stint at Brooklyn Bowl in the Linq. Fans can look forward to new songs off the group's third studio album "Phosphorescent Harvest," as well as older tunes like "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Older Guys." Tickets are $8; the show begins at 10 p.m.

Friday -- Sunday: NBA Summer League at Cox Pavilion and the Thomas & Mack Center

Las Vegas' NBA Summer League kicks off this weekend as 24 teams take over Cox Pavilion and the Thomas & Mack Center to play 67 games through July 21. Tonight -- Sunday: Las Vegas Elvis Fest at Westgate Las Vegas

For a fifth year, this four-day fan fest of all things King returns and includes an Elvis Tribute Artist contest, a Heart of the King awards ceremony and appearances from Elvis' former road manager Joe Esposito and original drummer D.J. Fontana. Tickets are $20 to $110; times vary.

Tonight -- Monday: Sand Dollar Lounge's Grand Reopening

Las Vegas' iconic Sand Dollar Lounge makes its return as a platform for live local music as part of the space now known as Bar 702 (3355 Spring Mountain Road). The space, which once hosted greats like B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band and Etta James, celebrates its comeback with a five-night blues reboot featuring local mainstays like The Stoney Curtis Band and The Moanin' Blacksnakes. Show are free and begin at 10 p.m.
