Walton moves forward despite loss of CFO

July 11--With the impending retirement of Walton County School District's chief financial officer, the district has already laid a foundation to move forward.

"We're moving straight ahead to meet our fiscal responsibilities," Anderson said.

Every summer, district finance offices prepare budgets for the upcoming school year and this year will be no different despite the unexpected shake up, she said.

Since Monday, the Florida Association for District School Superintendents has loaned the district a school finance specialist to prepare for Tuesday's budget workshop.

No information was shared during one scheduled for July 7 because the CFO, Mary Hobbs, went onto approved leave.

"I told (board members) because the CFO was not able to attend, I had no information to provide them at that time," Anderson said.

In addition to the budget discussions, the board will also be asked to consider a contract for a temporary CFO to see the district through at least the next month during the July 15 meeting.

Board members have also requested to discuss the district's job description for the CFO and hiring a company to do an audit of finances for the 2013-14 school year during that meeting.

Anderson said the Auditor Generals Office conducts regular audits of the district's finances free of cost and the one for the previous school year has already begun. If the board went forward with an additional audit, the district would have to pay for it, Anderson noted.
