Thomas Burns Elected Clarkson University Trustee

POTSDAM, N.Y., July 11 -- Clarkson University issued the following news release:

Thomas J. Burns of Falls Church, Va., president and chief executive officer of ENSCO Inc., has been elected to the Clarkson University board of trustees. He will serve on the internal affairs committee.

ENSCO and its wholly owned subsidiaries constitute a $100 million, 600-person technology enterprise serving the national security, transportation, and aerospace sectors.

Prior to joining ENSCO, Burns served as senior vice president and manager of Science Applications International Corporation's (SAIC) Sensors and Phenomenology Operation, where he was responsible for more than 900 employees and more than $300 million in research and development, system solutions, and products business.

Prior to joining SAIC, Burns co-founded and served as chief executive officer and chairman of SET Corporation, a small high-tech business specializing in the creation and commercialization of smart sensing technologies. SET was acquired by SAIC in 2010, where it continues to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Prior to founding SET, Burns co-founded and served as chief operating officer of ObjectVideo, Inc., a venture capital-backed leader in video analytics. He joined ObjectVideo from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, where as a program manager he pioneered the development of big data analytics to extract information from massive quantities of multi-sensor data, building on his experiences directing Computer Vision research as a United States Air Force officer at Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). While assigned to AFRL, he led AFRL's premiere Automatic Target Recognition program, receiving AFRL's prestigious Peter R. Murray Program Manager of the Year award.

Burns is co-inventor of patents on video and radar technology, and has published numerous refereed papers in areas as diverse as electro-optics and wavelet mathematics.

He sits on the National Academy of Science's Air Force Studies Board; serves on the Board of Managers of the National Museum of the United States Air Force; serves as vice chair of the Congressionally-directed National Research Council committee studying DoD-funded graduate STEM education alternatives; serves as a board director of Yakabod Inc., an innovative knowledge-management commercial product company; and serves as a board director of Systems and Technology Research Corp., a leader in research and development for the defense and intelligence sectors.

Burns received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a bachelor of arts in philosophy from The Ohio State University, and a master of science and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
