July 11--The Salt City Big Band will play its first concert of a three-concert season starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Farmer's Market Pavilion at Second and Washington.
The free concerts are open to the public and sponsored by the Hutchinson Municipal Band. The Salt City Big Band is being organized by Daryl Batchelor and Nick Schroeder, with Bryce Luty directing the band. All three concerts will feature many talented musicians coming from cities all over central and eastern Kansas.
Among the musicians featured will be the following:
Nick "Maria" Schroeder, who is jazz studies director at HCC, will play a trumpet feature from the Maynard Ferguson library. Schroeder played on cruise ships from the West Coast and also played for a year and a half with the Glenn Miller Band.
On the latest album the band made, Nick was the trumpet soloist on five of the selections. The recording is available at several record stores in Hutchinson.
Denny Brunk from McPherson will perform on the trombone and as a vocalist. Brunk has traveled to Los Angeles, where he was given a position on the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He stayed with the band for years and also played with the Buddy Rich Band for some time before he became a headliner on cruise ships from the West Coast.
So bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the Salt City Big Band's concert on Tuesday. The other two concerts will take place on July 22 and July 29, both starting at 8 p.m. and held at the Farmer's Market Pavilion.
