Conceptual artist On Kawara, known for "date paintings," dies at 81

July 11, 2014

On Kawara, an internationally renowned Japanese conceptual artist who first caught the public's attention with his bathroom drawings and who is best known for his "date paintings," has died, his family said Friday. He was 81.

The date paintings in the artist's so-called "Today" series consist of letters and numbers painted in white on solid-color canvases, with the characters denoting the date each work was created.

A native of Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, in central Japan, Kawara moved to New York in 1965. In 1998, an exhibition of his work was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in the Japanese capital.
