Tokyo stocks open lower after falls in European, U.S. shares

July 10, 2014

Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday after European and U.S. shares posted losses due to worries about the financial health of Portugal's leading bank.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 95.15 points, or 0.63 percent, from Thursday to 15,121.32. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 10.18 points, or 0.81 percent, at 1,249.07.

The U.S. dollar's decline to the lower 101 yen zone also cooled market sentiment. Major decliners included brokerage, insurance and marine transport shares.
