Japan : NTT DOCOMO and QUALCOMM collaborate to introduce VoLTE on large-scale

Japan based NTT DOCOMO has collaborated with US-based Qualcomm Technologies to introduce a large-scale commercial voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) in Japan.

The implementation of project includes a VoLTE solution based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, with a entirely featured multimode combined VoLTE modem and IMS software solution, which supports SMS, high definition (HD) voice, video telephony and single radio voice call continuity (SRVCC); the latter provides a smooth handover from LTE to 3G without dropped calls.

Kazuaki Terunuma, DOCOMO s vice president and managing director of the communication device development department, commented "NTT DOCOMO has launched the leading edge voice and video service, allowing VoLTE service to be made available commercially nationwide in Japan as of June With this comprehensive, stable and extensively tested chipset with IMS software solution, we are able to provide leading edge VoLTE services on mobile phones from several manufacturers to our customers."
