July 10--NORMAN -- The John Arnold Band will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Lions Park at Flood Avenue and Symmes Street. The free performance is part of the Summer Breeze concert series sponsored by The Depot.
The John Arnold Band traces its roots to 1980, when Arnold was named male vocalist of the year at the Oklahoma Opry. In 1983, the band won the national Dodge-Wrangler Country Showdown. The band toured extensively around the United States, once covering more than 25,000 miles in four months.
In 2003, band members reunited with old friends from the founding days of red dirt music at the Blue Rose Cafe reunion in Norman. The John Arnold Band appears on the resulting CD, "Blue Rose Cafe: A Reunion and Tribute to Pat Long." The band is working on a new CD.
Members are Arnold, lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Bob French, lead guitar, banjo and mandolin; John Spencer, drums; Gary Howe, fiddle; and Victor Rook, bass. The band performs a mix of country, swing, bluegrass, rock, jazz and more.
Concertgoers should bring blankets, lawn chairs and refreshments. For more information, go to www.normandepot.org.
