Alabama, Randy Houser, Rodney Atkins highlight a country weekend

July 10--The band Alabama is legendary.

Before they came on the scene in the late 1970s, country bands were relegated to playing supporting roles to the stars. Alabama was a self-contained unit that blended country and western traditions with pop and rock, which proved a successful combination. In its heyday, Alabama had a run of 21 consecutive No. 1 singles.

The band is currently in the midst of its "Alabama and Friends" tour, which stops Friday night at Tachi Palace in Lemoore. The tour commemorates the 40th anniversary of the band's first gig -- a summer slot at the South Carolina bar The Bowery. There is also an "Alabama and Friends" tribute album, which features Alabama's greatest hits performed by contemporary country stars, such as Jason Aldean, Eli Young Band and Florida Georgia Line.

The band is just one of a trio of country artists making their way through town this weekend.

Also performing:

-- Randy Houser, whose album "How Country Feels," earned him an American Country Award for Most Played Radio Track last year. He plays Friday night at Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.

-- Rodney Atkins, a comparative country veteran. The Tennessee singer, who plays Sunday at Visalia Fox Theatre, has a six-pack of No. 1 singles, including "Take a Back Road" and "These Are My People." In January, Atkins paired up with rapper Bubba Sparxxx for the song "Right."
