July 01--Tropical Storm Arthur has formed off the coast of Florida.

Tropical storm watches remain in effect from Fort Pierce to Flagler Beach.

As of the 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, maximum sustained winds are 40 mph with higher gusts. Arthur is located 60 miles east of Fort Pierce and is moving northwest at 2 mph. This motion should continue through tonight, followed by a turn to the north Wednesday.

On this forecast track, the center of Arthur is expected to remain just offshore.

Additional strengthening is forecast over the next 48 hours.

Waves near the shore are to be 5 to 6 feet and up to 7 feet farther out. Offshore wave heights could increase to 8 feet tonight.

Rainfall, from Tuesday to Wednesday, is predicted to be from 1 to 3 inches, with some areas getting up to 5 inches.

The storm is expected to move around 2 to 3 mph today and then pick up speed, to 5 to 10 mph, on Wednesday when it is forecast to move northward.

By the time the July 4 holiday rolls around, conditions should be drying out.

As Tropical Storm Arthur drifts toward the Florida coast today, our chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase. Bands of rain will swing through the area very quickly and gusty winds, lightning and heavy downpours are possible. Some flooding is possible in flood-prone areas of Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties, according to WPTV's Glenn Glazer.

There is a very slight risk for isolated weak tornadoes as well. The highest chances for rain will be this afternoon through this evening, Glazer added.

Expect a high near 88, according to the Weather Service. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Tonight, scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible as the tropical system begins to move to the north. Lows will be in the 70s with mostly cloudy skies, Glazer reports.

Expect a low around 78, according to the Weather Service, and a south-southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Sunset is at 8:19 p.m.
