July 01--WARRENSBURG -- Patient revenue at Western Missouri Medical Center totaled $14,792,962 in May, about $1 million below budget projections.

Chief Financial Officer Terri Bradley told the hospital board Friday that May "was a low month, but June is looking up," with increased patient census.

Deductions hit the target for the month, she said, but noted a shift from insurance deductions to deductions for charity and bad debt.

"I believe it's an economic thing," Bradley said, with more people having high-deductible insurance plans.

"Insurance is paying less," she said, "and they're putting it onto the individuals."

People may not be able to pay the $5,000 deductible in some plans.

Total operating revenue of $5,149,947 is $354,400 under budget for the month, but operating expenses came in "fairly flat with budget projections" at $5.4 million, Bradley said.

The operating loss for the month of $221,700 is a negative operating margin of 4.27 percent compared to the budgeted 1.9 percent.

With non-operating revenue and interest expense figured in, net loss for the month is $306,600, a negative 5.91 percent margin.

Year-to-date figures show patient revenue of about $74.6 million, more than $5 million under budget and about $5 million less than last year at the same time.

Total operating revenue of $27.3 million is about $1.1 million under budget, and about $2 million less than last year.

Operating expenses of $27,638,000 are $475,000 under budget for a total operating loss of about $307,500, or a negative margin of 1.13 percent.

Last year, the hospital recorded an operating loss of $563,700 during the same period, for a negative margin of 1.92 percent.

Total loss this year to date of $704,600 is a negative 2.58 percent for the year.

Last year, the hospital had a loss for the period of $1 million, for a negative 3.55 percent margin.

Bradley said the hospital is $300,000 ahead of last year.

"It's still negative, but not as negative," she said.
