Tokyo stocks open higher on Wall St. gains

Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as market sentiment was bolstered by overnight gains on Wall Street.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 18.01 points, or 0.12 percent, from Monday to 15,142.01. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 2.60 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,237.38.

Overnight in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 index both finished at record highs. Major gainers in the Tokyo market included steel, bank and nonferrous metal issues.
