June 10--Throughout history, every culture has shared one trait: music. All across the world, music has developed and evolved. As time goes on, we are still able to look back on the music of previous generations and share in the inspiration of past artists.

Victoria will have a chance to do just that at the 2014 Victoria Bach Festival. Beginning Tuesday, musicians from across the country will come to various venues in Victoria, most of which will be in the downtown area, to share some of the masterpieces of past eras using a wide variety of musical instruments and vocal performances.

The Bach Festival is always an exciting event, and we welcome the performers to our hometown. With so much talent coming in, it is guaranteed to be another year of wonderful performances. The performers in this year's eight performances will include pianist Melissa Marse, percussionist Todd Meehan and two-time Grammy winner Richard Stoltzman, performing clarinet.

One of the performances will be Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," which will be conducted by acclaimed composer Craig Hella Johnson. Johnson has been the artistic director of the Victoria Bach Festival since 1992 and has brought a myriad of musical performances to the Crossroads. Last year's event even featured a piece for the piano in which the player had to use her nose. In addition to the Bach Festival, Johnson is also the founder and artistic director of the Grammy-nominated choral ensemble Conspirare, which has come to Victoria to perform in Bach Festival events before.

It is an amazing privilege to have so many talented, nationally recognized individuals in our South Texas town. The Bach Festival has become one of many fabulous cultural events in our community, and we encourage Crossroads residents to come out and take advantage of this opportunity to listen to some of the music these artists will be performing.

Victoria has a thriving music community. We have a multitude of local bands, our own symphony orchestra, the Victoria Bach Festival and many more smaller events that feature musical acts throughout the year. We are glad to live in a region that has such a lively appreciation for music. Not many communities are as fortunate as Victoria when it comes to supporting the arts. Let's make sure we show our appreciation by taking in as many concerts as possible at this year's festival.
